For the month of October, I will be a part of a group show at Elliott Fouts Gallery. The list of artists in this show is amazing and it really is an honor to be included. The artists are: Christopher Stott, Teresa N. Fischer, Alvin Richard, James Neil Hollingsworth, Mary Ellen Johnson, Russell Harris, Jeff Cohen, Judy Nunes, Jelaine Faunce, and me.
The cherry on top was finding out that one of my pieces sold before the show even opened!

"The Real Thing" exhibit opens Sept.16 at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta, GA. This invitational show is a special event for the top 200 Coca Cola Company shareholders, as well as the public. My contribution to the show will be the two pieces below, both of which are now available...contact Mason Murer at info@masonmurer.com if you are interested.
A few of the other artists participating are: Neil Hollingsworth, Alvin Richard, Vic Vicini, Otto Lange, Teresa N. Fischer, Chris Stott, and Sally Tharp.

Finished! It's fairly obvious what my subject matter was: a euphonium. Well, maybe not obvious, but certainly you can tell it's some sort of shiny musical instrument. I wanted to use a reflective subject for my music themed OK Mozart piece, but really had no idea what kind of instrument to use or even how to get my hands on one. Then it dawned on me...I simply contacted Eddy Russell, Director of Bands, who is a fellow teacher at my school. He was generous enough to loan me a very photogenic euphonium to use as my reference. Once I popped the case open and put lights on it in my studio, I was amazed at how well it caught and twisted reflections. Little did I know at that time how challenging it would be to realize on canvas. But here we are many hours later and it's finished. I hope the parallels between music and visual art can be made, on some level, by everyone who sees it. The obvious are things like, movement, rhythm, harmony, etc. Less obvious connections can be found, and those are the more meaningful and personal ones.
This piece has nothing to do with Mozart specifically or even a genre of music. It is a symbol of music and nothing more. I intentionally tried to avoid that in every stage of this process to allow for individual connections.
Since this is a music themed piece, and I'm in the sharing mood(progress photos and such), I thought I would disclose the music I listened to while painting. I went through my entire collection of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, entire collection of The White Stripes(a couple of times). and Morphine(B sides and otherwise)....all of which covered about 12% of the time spent working on this piece!

Lovetts Gallery has invited me to produce a music themed painting for this year's OK Mozart event. The gallery is posting photo and narrative updates via their blog, so I actually have forced myself to take "in progress" pics of my painting. Many artists do this on a regular basis, but I have never worked that into my routine. But, since I have some now I thought I would go ahead and share.
Like I mentioned, the painting is based on a music theme, and I want the viewer to make the obvious (and vague) connections between music and visual art. It's a fairly straightforward approach...hope I'm successful.

The April 2nd Solo Exhibit and Live Paint demo at Lovetts Gallery went great! I was a little anxious about painting in public, but it was actually an enjoyable experience, due in no small part to the many people who took the time to come by and say hi. I honestly had no idea that there would be that many people who would want to watch me smear paint on the canvas. A big thank you to all of you for your many gracious comments! I really did enjoy meeting you and answering, or at least attempting to answer, your questions. Another big thank you to Jack(owner of Lovetts) and Waylon(director of Lovetts) for allowing me this awesome opportunity. There are a few pics from the day posted on the Lovetts Gallery website and blog, if you are so inclined to check them out. April 2, I will be participating in a live painting demonstration and solo exhibition at Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa. The exhibit will be up for the month of April, but the painting demo will only be from 10am - 5pm. If you're in the area, stop by and check out the new painting I will be working on.

It's been awhile, so I thought I would do something very uncommon on my blog and post without a picture of a new painting! I have some new stuff I'm working on, but really just wanted to share a little info I'm excited about. OK, here goes.....

I have been invited to join another gallery in Texas, called Art251 located in Keller, TX. It's a really cool gallery and I look forward to working with them.
I recently delivered several new paintings to Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa and was invited to participate in a show, of sorts, this spring. The traditional gallery reception will be replaced with an all day painting session. So, when I show up with more new paintings, I will also have my easel, brushes, oils....and a canvas to smear paint on. I've never painted for an audience before, so I hope I don't fold under the pressure.
I have been invited to have my work included in a new book(more info to come on this...btw, it's not one of those "pay a fee" to be included "books"
Later this year, I will have work in a group show called "The Still Life", at Elliot Fouts Gallery.

I will definitely post more detailed information about each of these in the future. My next post will be of a finished painting, I promise!

This show is sponsored by the city of Keller, TX (between Dallas and Ft.Worth). Keller has a Public Arts program that understands the importance of and actively promotes the arts in their community. The Keller Public Arts Program sponsors monthly art exhibits and invites artists to show work. This exhibit is a little atypical, because it is not in a traditional gallery space. The display area for the exhibit is actually the Town Hall building, which sounds like an odd place for an art show....I know. However, the building is impressive and it actually works quite well to showcase art. I agreed to do this show for a couple of reasons, one of which is the basic concept of the exhibit: to bring art work out of a traditional setting and potentially expose a wide variety of people to something new. I think this is a wonderful concept and is a win/win for everyone involved.
The show opens November 2, and will run through November 30. On Thursday, November 11, there will be a "meet the artists" reception from 7-9pm in the foyer of Keller Town Hall. This reception coincides with the monthly gallery walk in Keller. Several galleries are literally across the street from Keller Town Hall.

After taking a break from painting for a few weeks, I'm back in the studio again. Shortly after starting this piece, I had doubts. I felt rusty and a tiny but overwhelmed, especially since my previous three paintings were tiny compared to this 24"x36" canvas. Thankfully, I found my groove quickly and I was soon experiencing those familiar painting sessions that last for hours, but feel like minutes. Extremely satisfying.

What a challenge these were. I had to dig out some of my tiny brushes for these. Over the past year or so I have been working fairly large, so jumping into this set of commissioned paintings was a shock to the system. I believe that a good painting(my style anyway) starts with a good drawing. I am totally OK with spending time tweaking that aspect before I squeeze any paint, but these little babies were tough! At such a small scale, "mistakes" really stick out. I like to draw and paint using my arm/shoulder(you know what I mean), but I had to forgo that familiar motion, and use just my hand. Challenging and really took me out of my comfort zone. To make things even more interesting, I painted on a support that I have never used before: Ampersand textured panels for the two 8x8's.

As far as subject matter, I probably would have never considered this antique duck toy for a painting. It just doesn't contain things I look for when choosing things to paint. However, it turned out to be quite satisfying to paint. I am really pleased with how these pieces turned out.

I decided to take a break from producing pieces for my upcoming fall show. My studio walls are covered with finished paintings for the show, and I've even "loaned out" a few to a local, trusted collector! I honestly don't think I have had this many finished pieces on hand since college. No doubt having all of this finished work around me influenced my decision to take a break and accept some commissioned work.

This is one commissioned piece...a straight forward take on the Elmer's rubber cement bottle.

I wasn't happy with the original piece, so I decided to go back and work on it. Changed the eyes and the background. Mixed "newer" Batman w/Adam West Batman.

I once saw Adam West in person at a book signing. Total coincidence, but still cool to see him. He was of course in civilian clothes, but something that struck me funny then, now, and every time I think about it was his shoes. Batman was wearing Birkenstocks. Nothing wrong with them, but I just never envisioned Batman with Birkenstocks.

I have work in two shows that will open soon. The first show is the Lovetts Gallery Masters of Influence juried invitational. The show will open on June 19th with a reception from 5:00-8:00pm and runs through July 19th. Check out the online catalog of pieces in the show. Looks like there will be some awesome work in this show.

The second show is sponsored by the Greater Denton Arts Council and is entitled Hidden Artists: Those Who Teach. It will showcase art produced by area art teachers. I will have three pieces in this show. Ironically, it also opens on June 19th at the Meadows Gallery with a reception from 4:00-6:00pm and runs through July 19th.
Since both shows open the same evening, and are so far apart...I will only be able to attend one opening. I still haven't decided which one.

This is a new piece for an upcoming show at Lovetts: Masters of Influence. The juried invitational will feature singular pieces from over 50 artists nationwide. Each piece for the show is inspired by the chosen "master". This year, the master of influence is Charles Loloma(1921-1992). Loloma, a Native American jeweler, infused a great sense of design into his work.

While it was easy to get inspired by Loloma's amazing work, it was challenging to settle on exactly what I wanted to paint. However, I am satisfied with the painting I ended up with. I don't want to break down my painting and explain why and what...I would much rather have the viewer make their own connections.

Let me just say that I am not a portrait painter. I paint portraits about as often as I paint flowers...which is almost never. Needless to say, I was out of my comfort zone while painting this piece. I think it turned out ok, but I may go back and work on it a bit more. Normally, I am extremely confident when I decide a piece is finished...not so much with this one.

By the way, Jack is my son and he is two.

Lovetts Spring Perspective

Well, the Lovetts Spring Perspective opening was Feb.26 and it was awesome! Courtney(my wife) and I drove up the day before to drop off my final four paintings for the show. We were both very impressed with the gallery…really a beautiful space. This was also the first time to meet Waylon Summers in person. Waylon is the Gallery Director at Lovetts, and I can’t say enough good things about him. Super nice guy and very much “in the know” about art. We also met Jack Summers, owner of Lovetts and Waylon’s dad. Just like Waylon, Jack was a pleasure to meet. That evening, Jack and Waylon took us to dinner. Maurice Evans and Chapel (two other artists in the show) joined us, along with Christina Burke (curator, Philbrook Museum of Art). Good food, interesting conversation. Christina invited us to visit the Philbrook while in town, so the next day we did. Courtney opted for a spa treatment at the hotel, so Maurice, Chapel and I drove over to the museum. In addition to a beautiful structure and stunning gardens, the Philbrook offered a very impressive and extremely diverse collection of art.
The night of the opening was impressive too. There was a huge turn out and the place looked great. The pieces in the gallery were beautifully lit, but the ambient lighting proved to be a challenge for Courtney's little Nikon…or her photography skills…maybe both. End result: less than spectacular photos, but I wanted to share a few anyway.
James Smith, another artist in the show was there and we traded stories about our teaching experiences. The fifth artist in the show, Mateo Romero, was unable to attend the opening.
Thanks again to Waylon and Jack who have been terrific to work with and whose hospitality went above and beyond. Waylon’s enthusiasm and drive to increase public awareness about art is inspiring. Check out his blog, Western Perspectives.

This one is for Jean since she is a fan of Alice in Chains. I am from the small town in OK where Jerry Cantrell's father("Rooster") is from. I actually played on the same little league baseball team with Jerry's brother, David.
I have climbed the highest point in Texas: Emory Peak 7,795 ft. in the Chisos Mountains... I know, I know...but it's Texas.

I am restoring a 1972 Chevy pickup( more of a "resto-rod" ) "frame off"...which means everything is completely disassembled and either replaced or reconditioned. Right now, it is at a rolling chassis state.
I have been to Iceland...sort of. Actually never go off the plane, but did land there!
I have been scuba diving off the Palancar Reef in Cozumel, Mexico.
The Darjeeling Limited was one of my favorite movies from last year.

I am pleased to announce that I have been invited to join a fantastic group of artists represented by Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, OK. Lovetts is an established gallery of 30 years and I am excited to have my work shown there. In addition, I will be participating in the gallery’s 2009 Spring Perspective show. Small painting of an even smaller toy police officer with befitting metallic finish. The actual little toy was blue, suitable as well, but shiny things fascinate me and I wanted to try to make it look copper. I hope it comes across as such...this is the first time I have ever had to attempt to capture the look of copper, and wasn’t too sure I could, hence the small format. I figured a smaller size would be easier to throw across the studio if it didn’t cooperate.

Campari

Campari is a type of bitters(28% alcohol) that is a combination of sixty ingredients. The recipe has been a secret for 150 years, but the bright red natural coloring made possible by the Cochineal insect(Beetle Blood) was switched to a synthetic dye in 2007. Campari is the choice drink of Steve Zissou, among others. I have wanted to paint Campari for quite awhile. Unfortunately I didn't have any Campari, so I just used some CranRaspberry juice instead.

I was recently invited to be a guest artist and presenter at a summer art program held in the Art Dept. at East Central University in Oklahoma, my Alma Mater. It was very cool to walk in to the Art Dept. after all these years. It's been about 12 years since I have been back, but as soon as I walked in, it felt like home. Within microseconds, I was greeted by that familiar smell of all things art. My presentation was actually in the Drawing studio, but I did get a chance to walk through the Painting studio, which was vacant at the time. I was pleased to see the obvious talent present in the paintings of various stages of completion. I thought back to the countless hours I had spent in that room.

Near the end of the day, I had an inquiry about one of my paintings I took as an example. It was the Broken Pieces painting. Unfortunately this painting was for sale on eBay and I wasn't sure if it had sold or not. Sooo, I went into one of the classrooms with interent access to see if the auction had ended with a sale or not. It had sold on eBay, but we worked out a commission for a similar piece..no big deal. BUT, in that classroom that I had been next door to ALL day was one of my paintings from back in the day. When I graduated in 1996, the E.C.U. Art Department wanted to keep one of my paintings. I was honored and humbled back then, and even more so seeing it hanging after all these years. This painting is 4 feet by 6 feet.
